Learn how to buy and sell used items safely in Pakistan: what to check before you pay, where to meet, and which red flags mean you should walk away.

Buyer inspecting a second-hand item to buy and sell used items safely in Pakistan

Most used-item deals in Pakistan go fine. Someone wants a sofa, someone else wants to clear one out, they agree on a price and that’s that. The trouble starts when one side rushes. A buyer skips the inspection because the price looks great. A seller hands over the goods before checking that the money actually arrived.

None of the habits below are complicated. They just take a little patience, which is the one thing scammers want you to skip.

Read the Ad Properly Before You Message Anyone

Go through the title, photos, price, location and description. Does the description say anything beyond “good condition, serious buyers only”? A real seller usually mentions the model, age, faults and what’s included. If the ad is vague, ask specific questions before you travel anywhere.

Compare a few similar ads too. That gives you a rough idea of the going rate, but it’s only an asking price, not proof of what the item is really worth. We cover this in more detail in our guide to researching second-hand prices in Pakistan.

Ask for Fresh Photos of the Actual Item

Manufacturer pictures tell you nothing. Ask for close-ups of scratches, dents, repairs and missing parts. For electronics, ask for a short video with the device switched on. A seller who is happy to send three quick photos usually has nothing to hide. One who keeps avoiding the question is worth being careful with.

Inspect It in Person Before Paying

If you can, see the item first. Test what matters to you, check the accessories and look for signs of repair. For anything expensive, bring a friend who knows the product, or pay for an independent check. If the seller says three other people are on their way, let them come. A rushed decision is rarely your best one.

Buying something specific? Use our checklists for a used mobile phone and a used car. You can also browse current vehicle listings to compare prices.

Checking a used phone before paying the seller

Check the Paperwork for Phones and Vehicles

For a used phone, check the IMEI before paying. The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority’s DIRBS portal shows whether a device is registered and can be used on local networks.

For a car or bike, ask to see the registration book and the seller’s CNIC, and make sure the names match. Verify the details through your provincial excise and taxation office, such as Punjab Excise, rather than relying only on photocopies. Don’t accept an excuse like “the papers are with a friend”.

Pick the Meeting Spot and Payment Method With Care

  • Meet somewhere public and busy, in daylight if possible, and tell someone where you’re going.
  • For expensive goods, choose a place with some staff or security around, such as a mall or a shop.
  • Don’t send an advance “booking” payment to a stranger.
  • Never share passwords, PINs or one-time codes. A genuine buyer or seller will never need them.
  • Sellers: wait until the money is actually in your account. A screenshot of a transfer proves nothing.

Choose a Safer Way to Pay

Cash in person is simple for smaller deals. Count it and check the notes before handing over the item. For larger amounts, meeting at a bank branch lets you confirm the transfer immediately, whether it’s a bank transfer or a mobile wallet. Open your own banking or wallet app to confirm the balance, and never trust a link or screenshot sent by the other person. The State Bank of Pakistan publishes consumer guidance on avoiding digital payment fraud, which is worth a read before a big transaction.

Keep Personal Information to a Minimum

You need to share a phone number and a meeting place, and not much else. If someone asks for your ID card, bank login details or a code “to verify” you, stop. The same goes for unexpected links that claim to let you receive payment. Open your banking app yourself instead of tapping a link someone sent you.

If You’re Selling, Write an Honest Ad

Good ads sell faster, and they save you from awkward arguments at handover. Use a specific title, clear photos in good light, and a price you can justify. Mention the age, condition, accessories and any faults. Don’t call something original, registered or under warranty unless you can back it up. If you’re stuck on pricing, our guide to pricing second-hand furniture works for most other items too.

Know the Warning Signs

Be suspicious when you see several of these together:

  • A price far below every similar ad
  • A demand for a deposit before you’ve seen the item
  • A refusal to let you inspect it
  • A story that changes between messages
  • Requests for codes, or pressure to click a link

One red flag isn’t proof of fraud. A pile of them is a good reason to stop.

What to Do If You Think You’re Being Scammed

Don’t send any more money or information. Save the chat, screenshots and any payment details. Report the ad to the platform, and contact your bank or wallet provider straight away, since quick action gives them the best chance of helping. You can also file a complaint with the FIA’s National Response Centre for Cyber Crime (NR3C).

FAQs

Is it safe to buy used items online in Pakistan?

It can be, if you check the item, check the seller as far as you reasonably can, and avoid advance payments. No marketplace can remove all risk, so your own checks matter.

Should I pay before I see the item?

For anything you can inspect locally, no. Pay after you’ve seen it and it matches the ad.

What should a good second-hand ad include?

Clear recent photos, a specific title, the real condition, key specs, location, price and any faults or missing parts.

What if a seller pressures me?

Slow down. Don’t send money or share codes. If something feels wrong, leave the deal and report it.

How can I check a used phone before buying?

Note the IMEI from the device’s settings or the box, check its registration status on the PTA DIRBS portal, and make sure it turns on, charges and holds a network signal before you pay.
